Silistra is a city located on the port on the Danube in northeastern Bulgaria. It is the economic and administrative center. Passes through European transport corridor № 7. According to recent data, the population of the city is 35,000 inhabitants.
History
Silistra is a city founded 2400 years ago, so it's known for its rich history and culture. Later it was conquered by the Romans and called Durostorum. In this region had been settled some of the most elite people of the Roman Empire — Claudius Legion. Between II and VI century Durostorum was the greatest enemy of barbarians. In 897 years only Tsar Simeon is established in these lands, and later the city became the residence of the First Bulgarian Patriarch Damyan.
During Ottoman rule, Durostorum is heavily fortified, and then in 1877, it was occupied by the Russians and the Bulgarians retreat again.
